BAC Water is a 10 mL catalogue presentation of bacteriostatic water intended as a laboratory diluent. Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP is defined in official labelling as sterile, non-pyrogenic water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol (9 mg/mL) as a preservative; whether every one of those attributes applies to this product must be confirmed on its own label and matching batch documentation.

Selection and laboratory use

A preservative can allow repeated withdrawals from an appropriately specified multi-dose container, but it can also make the diluent unsuitable for materials that are incompatible with benzyl alcohol. Do not select a diluent by habit: use the specification or validated method for the exact material being prepared. For protocols that specifically require a mildly acidified medium, Acetic Acid 0.6% is a different product and is not automatically interchangeable with BAC Water.

Quality, storage and handling

Check the product label and matching batch documents for benzyl-alcohol concentration, sterility, endotoxin testing, pH, fill volume and storage conditions. The 28-day in-use periods found in some authorised medicinal-product labels apply to those specific products and preparation instructions; they should not be extended to this vial unless its own documentation states the same limit.

Use only if the container is intact and the liquid matches the specified appearance. Keep the closure clean, minimise contamination during withdrawals and follow the labelled storage and disposal instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is bacteriostatic water the same as sterile water?

No. Officially labelled bacteriostatic water contains a preservative, whereas sterile water does not. Compatibility and batch specifications still need to be checked.

Can an opened vial always be kept for 28 days?

No universal period should be assumed. Follow the in-use limit and storage conditions stated for the exact product and protocol.
